We live in a world that celebrates speed. Getting things done quickly often feels like progress, slowing down can feel like falling behind. For a long time I believed that too. I assumed my best ideas would come when I pushed harder, moved faster and stayed in motion.
But over time, I noticed that the ideas that stayed with me, like the ones that shaped my life rarely came while I was rushing. They showed up when I paused, even briefly.
Initially, I thought pausing was mainly about creativity and problem-solving, but now I know it does much more than that.
Taking a moment to pause can safeguard your relationships and preserve your peace. It can also subtly influence your future.
A few years ago, I was working on a major project with a partner. We had been building together for over three years when he let me down in a way that felt deeply personal and incredibly painful.
I was furious and ready to burn every bridge, leaving nothing but scorched earth in my wake.
I held my phone in my hand, prepared to respond, but my wife noticed, calmly took the phone from me and said, “Calm down, just pause. Don’t do anything yet.”
She made me promise not to call or text him. Not just then, so I paused.
And that pause? It made all the difference.
When we eventually spoke, the conversation was different, and so was the outcome. Today, we are still friends and have even collaborated on a few projects together (with caution, of course).
That moment taught me something I’ve never forgotten.
A creative pause is about both ideas and emotions; it is the space between feeling something and acting on it, the moment before sending the message you’ll regret, the breath before saying something sharp, and the decision to step away instead of exploding.
That pause is wisdom and not a weakness.
Now, let me be clear, urgency is not the enemy, deadlines matter, and momentum can fuel creativity. In fact, some of my best work has come from tight deadlines and creative pressure.
But urgency without awareness can be costly.
We rush because it feels productive. We react because it feels strong, and sometimes, that is exactly what the moment requires. But there are other quiet moments where waiting, breathing, and choosing deliberately make all the difference.
The world will keep spinning fast, but you don’t have to match its pace all the time to find your power.
Sometimes, the most creative and courageous thing you can do is simply pause.
